If you smoke, like 50 million other Americans, and would like to quit smoking cigarettes, you may be interested to know that the FDA recently approved nicotine lozenges for use in the United States. GlaxoSmithKline is the first U.S. pharmaceutical company to market a nicotine lozenge called COMMIT(tm).

Nicotine lozenges join nicotine gum, patches, inhalers, and other tools to help you to quit smoking! Nicotine lozenges have been in use in the UK, Ireland, and Australia for some time. Nicotine lozenges have been the subject of studies at the University of Pittsburgh and Duke University. They seem to be most effective for smokers who commit themselves to stop smoking and who smoke less than a pack a day.

And here is some trivia we've picked up: In 1979, a scientist accidently conceived the idea for the nicotine patch when he tripped in his laboratory and spilled liquid nicotine on his arm. The scientist's name, from the information we have, was named Dr. Frank Etscorn. Dr. Etscorn was not a smoker. But, after the liquid nicotine absorbed into his system through his skin, he felt as though he was a smoker! He developed a nicotine patch, applied for a patent, and the rest is history.

Today, we have not only nicotine patches, but gum, sprays and now, nicotine lozenges. Surely there will be many more products to follow in the war against smoking!
